some good news about the space elevator!

I just can't wrap my head around this. The rotational velocity of the earth is on the order of 1,000 miles per hour. I don't see how any 62,000 mile high support or column wouldn't be ripped to shreds, regardless of the material it's made out of. Inertial forces would tear it asunder, assuming anyone could ever figure a way to even install it in the first place.

And the first piece of space junk, or micro-meteor that flies by at 17,000 miles an hour would just obliterate it.
