good lord, i hate this movie

look, i don't really have a lot of love for the troglodytes over at aicn. more often than not, their breathless fanboyism makes me want to punch myself in the face for liking some of the same things they do.

however, there's a special place in my heart for hating on eragon. perhaps it's the residual self-loathing of a former (very former, asshole) dragonlance reader, or maybe it's just that this kind of shitstorm of a novel makes anybody who actually enjoys fantasy of any stripe feel like a total schmuck. quality, original, amazing, fantastic fiction does exist out there, but every book of sword-and-sorcery cookie cutter tripe that comes out just encourages people to write off the whole genre. so, thanks, homeschooled dipshit, for tying your cinderblock of a brainfart around the necks of actual fantasy fans everywhere. enjoy your millions of dollars.

p.s. your dragon looks completely retarded.

Aww, and here I was thinking I'd get to see a cool flick with dragons fighting people. Is it really that bad?
Or should I just go out and buy Panzer Dragoons?

Having read the book (I'm a librarian in a middle school for f- sake) and seen the crapstorm that was this movie, I have to put a qualifier down. Yes, the author was a homeschooled kid who probably didn't have a friend in the world that lived less than 300 miles away. So he spent his whole life reading fantasy and then wrote a derivative book based on his favorites.

His book (I've only read the first one), however, is much less of a complete suckfest than the movie. It does a very good job of character development, and includes a few inventive twists (not too many, but a few). For it's target age the book(s?) is actually well worth a read, especially taking into account the age of the kid who wrote it.

The failure of the movie should lie with the screenwriter. Each non-derivative scene or fragment was surgically removed and replaced with some awful Star Wars or LoTR stock material.

I won't go so far as to say read the book and see how great it is, but I will say I feel bad for the kid, because he lost a ton of potential readers by allowing some moron to touch his book.

i don't believe you. at this point, i'm more or less convinced that there can't be good fantasy involving dragons. they're like poison to interesting or good ideas. i still hold out hope for george r.r. martin's series, but even that is more like hope that he'll salvage something i won't hate out of the mess that his story has become. forget about the rest of it.

Oh, leave Martin alone. I loved his last book. So what if it was low on action? He only went over a few of the characters, his next one will clear the rest of it up.

You are way too jaded, man. I think Martin's going to cruise his tale into one hell of an ending.

maybe you're right, and if that happens i'll be just as happy about it as you. he needs to quit it with the bullshit magic and get back to the politicking and killing people that made the series so much fun in the first place.

in truth, martin's dragons aren't even that bad. i like that they're more greed-inspiring than awe-inspiring. and stupid robert jordan doesn't even have dragons (just pterodactyl troop transports) and his books are asstacular. anyway, eragon blows. the end.
